Dear Shane, Could not believe that tips for buying a used car was listing Shawcroft Motors . We bought our car from them with a few problems including a service that had been ticked in the book and had not been carried out. Took the car after we bought it due to noise to an independant garage and ended up having to pay over £2000 for various problems including brakes. The car is also an import when told it wasn’t.
Shawcroft motors seemed really helpful when buying the car and then when this happend he did offer to pay £400.00 which after promising to send has not and it has now been nearly 5 months.
You do expect to pay for repairs on second hand motors but not when you have just bought the car.
Thought you should know what happened;
Thanks shell and kev

Hi Kev and Michelle,
Thanks for your comments. I was sorry to read about your recent experiences. In Ireland the legislation designed to protect consumers who find they have bought something that wasn’t advertised correctly is pretty robust (Consumer Protection Act). Maybe the UK has something similar?

Also, if you’re not getting satisfaction from the dealer directly you could always approach the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd (SMMT). I believe they have a consumer affairs department that could help (provided the garage in question is a member of the society).

I just found the two pieces of relevant legislation. They’re called the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and the Sale of Goods Act 1979.

Hope this helps!
