Scrappage scheme scrapped!
10 April 2009Proposals from representatives of the Irish Motor Industry for the introduction of a scrappage scheme were ignored by government in this week's emergency budget. It was hoped that a 2,000 Euro allowance would have been made available for anyone trading a 10 year old car in against a new 'Green' vehicle in an effort to revive an industry currently on its knees.
Sales of new cars have plummeted in Ireland with the latest figures showing a decline of over 65% on last years numbers.
Over 6,000 jobs have been lost in the industry with an average of 1 main dealer closing every week. 3 day working weeks are now the norm for sales executives up and down the country and commentators forecast a dismal 50 - 60,000 new cars will be sold in Ireland this year, numbers not seen since the late sixties.
