When it comes to evaluating the health of an EV battery, many rely solely on the State of Health (SoH) figure reported by the car’s onboard Battery Management System (BMS).
But here's the truth:
The BMS SoH is just one piece of the puzzle — and it can be misleading.
In a recent case outlined in detail by AVILOO, a vehicle showed a seemingly healthy 89.87% SoH according to the BMS. However, the driver reported a significant reduction in range.
The AVILOO FLASH Test quickly flagged a red alert due to a cell defect and a follow-up Test confirmed it: the actual SoH was just 42%.
This illustrates a crucial point: Only dynamic, independent testing can expose hidden battery defects that the BMS alone might miss.
