132 Number Plate Shakes Things Up for New Car Sales

New car sales were bolstered with an impressive increase this July of 164%. The 132 number plate was fixed to 11,621 new cars last month as against 4,410 last year. This was the third highest month for new car sales this year, second only to March by a mere 55 units.
The results mean that the unprecedented drop in June of 73% was rectified bringing the combined total for June and July in at 13,284, 24% over the same period last year.
Motorcheck's statistics show new car sales for the year-to-date now total 64,618, 9% behind the same period in 2012 which was 70,774.

Top Models

Only 1 unit separated the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf from the top spot with 625 & 624 sales respectively.
However the Volkswagen Golf remains Ireland's most popular model this year with 3,298 (5.1% of the total market) units sold. The Nissan Qashqai is in second place with 2,815 (4.3%) units registered whilst the Ford Focus takes third position with 2,563 (3.9%) registrations.

Other Statistics

  • Diesel engines remain popular with 72% of the total for new car sales.
  • 93% of all new car sales registered were in Band A or B, the lowest tax bands.
  • Silver and Black remain the two most popular colours representing a combined total of 45% of the entire sales.
  • The MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) is the body style of choice with 30% of sales.
