Car Clocking still a major issue in Ireland

At time of going to press we have not seen any change in the occurrence of clocking. At Motorcheck.ie we perform regular market sampling on car clocking and in recent times our samples have hovered between 15-20% of all vehicles sampled showing a discrepancy against previous odometer readings. Sadly our most recent sample in May of this year does not show any improvement.

Car Clocking is thought to cost car buyers €60m annually and causes untold grief to the victims but the Minister for Transport Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, is set to tackle the issue head on today by introducing amendments to legislation criminalising the practice in Ireland

Car Clocking Boss of ‘Mileage Correction’ Company Jailed

A Swindon based trader, Colin Michael Ogle, has been jailed for nine months for car clocking. This is the first time the provider of ‘mileage correction services’, rather than the seller of clocked vehicles, has been convicted under UK consumer law.

Car Dealer Fined 1,200 Euro for Car Clocking

In a sitting of Galway Distric Court yesterday Judge Mary Fahy described the act of clocking as ‘a serious offense which merited a large fine’. The accused a Mr. Tabachuk was subsequently fined €1,200 and ordered that the €4,000 originally paid for the car be returned to the buyer.

A recent undercover operation by the BBC has uncovered a rise in the number of cars being clocked in Northern Ireland.

Trading Standards are quoted as saying “We would be hard pushed to identify a town or city where there isn’t a clocker or a number of clockers operating”
